Project Case Study
The Menominee Historic Downtown Farmers’ Market Association website was originally created in 2013 using something called Cushy CMS. Various elements of the website could not be updated by the client.
The website also lacked an SSL certificate, so there was a security error when visitors went there. In addition, it was not mobile friendly or responsive at different resolutions. Worse yet, the contact page was mysteriously broken for a long time.
The client found the admin interface difficult to use when they needed to update their hours and other info. They told me that it took them HOURS to make even the simplest of updates. Their original web designer was no longer available to help. An upgrade was long overdue.
We did not have access to the old web hosting or files, and the admin interface was broken, so we had to move on. I meticulously copied all of the text and info that was still visible from the previous website. And then started from scratch with a brand new managed web hosting plan, and a fresh new WordPress installation.
The client did not have a preference regarding the layout or design, and agreed to let me design something of my choosing. I told them that I wanted to do a bright and vibrant look, with carrots, bell peppers, and radishes as my main inspiration. I asked them to look at the Adobe Stock Photos website and show me some examples of pictures they liked. They picked one out to start with. I licensed it for use and started to build the new site around it.
I knew that the client loved their logo, but it was too large and clunky to fit into the menu bar. In addition, it was not transparent, and was too low quality and pixelated for any other purposes. I made several rough drafts of ideas I had for logos for the site. They chose one that they liked. I spent a couple more hours refining it and testing it in various places around the site, to create a new higher quality, higher resolution logo that would fit the layout of the site, as well as different versions that would work with facebook, twitter, and any other social media profiles they might make in the future.
After I had time to make my ideas into a website design that I was really happy with, I called and walked them through looking at the proposed website on the phone. I also showed them how to edit a page, add a new event, and update vendor information.
I explained what SEO is and why it’s important, showed them how to optimize their on-page SEO for each page, post, and event, and gave some other training and advice as the client clicked on things and asked questions about the functionality.
I was so happy to hear excited exclamations of “That looks wonderful!”, “It really has that WOW factor!”, “This is a lot easier to edit than the old site!”, and “This is so much more than I ever expected for this price” as the client explored the pages of their new website for the first time with me. It made my whole week to hear the joy and excitement in her voice, and to be told that I had not only exceeded expectations, but I had completely blown them away.
I also thought that the new logos I created for them would look amazing on some merchandise, so I told the client about it. They loved the idea, so I created a spreadshop for them too. Now the Market Master as well as vendors and supporters are able to order customized hats, shirts, sweaters, aprons, and more featuring the new logos. Check it out!!
From start to finish, this project took about 6 weeks to complete. This was because the client was still taking classes, workshops, and seminars and gathering the required information for all of the programs.
We also had to wait for some of the programs to update their official applications and release them before we could create our own online version of the applications.
Start to finish, I put in 70 hours of work between January 27th and March 20th in order to complete this project. The client is thrilled, and loves their website. I would call this a success.
